Bullfights in Central India: Post-Diwali tradition in Madhya Pradesh

Bullfight is an age-old tradition in Central India too.

A day after Diwali, these bouts are held across cities and towns of Madhya Pradesh.

This is the scene of a bullfight in Burhanpur in Western MP.

Nearly 100 bulls took part in the bouts held on the banks of Amravati river in Shahpur throughout the day. Many people were injured during the day.

Initially, the bulls and male buffaloes of smaller size, called paada [पाड़ा] [پاڑا], locked horns. Later, the big bulls were brought in. Prabhakar Shivram's bull emerged champion and was given the first prize.

Kishan Prajapati, Raju, Mukesh, Sheikh Suleman got other prizes as their bulls were adjudged next.
They got prizes ranging from motorbike to television and fridge to cooking gas connection. Hundreds had come to watch the spectacle.
